Look Up during your Job Search

We often look for jobs with our heads down and await the chance to announce our new opportunity to friends & family - not sharing any of the struggle to get there.

I'd like to share why that can be the wrong approach. You have to put your head up and ask for help. I made a post on Facebook (about 7 years ago) that said “Hey…it never hurts to ask your network, right? I am looking for a new gig so if you have any leads (marketing, advertising, digital), I’d be so grateful. (I was let go earlier this month - I am freelancing right now through at least the middle of October so that’s good.)

That status update was SUPER uncomfortable for me and I felt very vulnerable...you can't tell in the post but those were the feelings behind it. Being let go NEVER feels good - even if you didn't really like your job.

I'm grateful for the response to this one post. It lead to a friend from HS suggesting I apply to be an Adjunct Instructor at Loyola (via PM)...which worked out and soon after I was hired at Aquent as a Recruiter (after a friend from college suggested looking at Aquent). Those TWO experiences lead to a deep interest in Career Services/Higher Ed...where I lucked out that my BFF from college was working in it and able to provide advice. She reviewed my resume, offered support and the rest is history.

Your network is powerful. Don't be afraid to ask for their help.

Is it easy to make a Career Transition?
